Bugs List
1.
When
cooking dinner, the stove in my apartment won’t heat quickly enough, but
there’s no chance of getting a replacement unit. The bug exists because the
apartment company is too cheap to buy new stoves for all the units.
2.
The
water in my apartment has floaters of debris after pouring it in a glass. As
there’s no other method of getting water, I’m forced to buy it as opposed to
using the tap. This bug is caused by the water provider providing subpar water.
3.
It’s
too difficult to walk to midtown in the rain, but Uber’s surge pricing makes
the trip cost prohibitive. This bug is caused by lack of transportation options
combined with the elements.
4.
It’s
too inconvenient to get groceries in Gainesville without a car. This is caused
by expensive alternatives and lack of bus transportation in my area.
5.
There
is a lack of glasses selection at my eye doctor’s office, likely because of
licensing deals falling through. I wish I didn’t have to pay a premium to order
online.
6.
I
can’t get all of the football games I want while watching TV without paying for
expensive premium cable bundles. A larger variety of options and lower prices
would help me.
7.
There
isn’t enough affordable parking for those who live off campus. Thanks to UF
changing parking rules over the summer, there are even less options. This is
because of poor infrastructure as well as University policy
8.
There
isn’t any common way of disposing cigarettes, so they often end up as litter on
the ground. This is due to the unsolved issue of convenient cigarette disposal.
9.
When
playing Fantasy football, the ESPN app I’m required to use doesn’t update
player news quickly enough to make lineup decisions, forcing me to download
more apps and waste time. This is likely caused by ESPN not listening to
consumers, as many app users are experiencing the same problem.
10. My iPhone 7 is too new to work as it should
with my 2013 MacBook, resulting in a lot of lost time every time I try to
charge the device. This is likely a software issue, but there aren’t any
current solutions for the problem.
11. When driving, people often tell me
to contact them when I arrive to my destination, something I often forget to
do. I often can’t set a reminder as I’m driving, so I have to rely on my
unreliable memory to complete the task. The issue is self-caused, but a
reminder alternative is necessary.
12. When going to midtown, the lines to
order drinks are long, disorganized, and you often get lost in the fight to the
front. This is caused by lack of organization as well as large crowds.
13. Trying to get anywhere around
campus during rush hour takes longer than it should, with little alternative
routes. This is due to poor urban planning, and lack of ability to expand.
14. The dumpster at my apartment is too
far away, leading to me keeping trash in my apartment for far too long. The
dumpster’s poor location is the root of this cause
15. The people living above me in my
apartment have loud feet, and I can hear their footsteps whenever they move.
This is caused by poor sound deadening and insulation in the complex.
16. My phone’s front camera is blurry,
but not damaged, rendering the front camera useless. This was caused by a
botched screen repair job.
17. I always leave pens in my pocket,
causing them to ruin my clothes in the washer. Other than my lack of oversight,
the harmful nature of ink when it comes in contact with fabric is also a cause.
18. I have to buy expensive TV packages
to get the small number of channels I actually watch. This is due to antiquated
models of selling cable TV, and lack of alternatives to access the channel
content.
19. It is far too difficult to register
to sit in a student block at football games. As you have to register for every
game, I find myself forgetting, causing me to sit with someone else. This is
caused by an outdated ticketing system on the website as well as my memory
shortfalls.
20. When ordering delivery to my
apartment, drivers constantly struggle to find where my building is, as it’s
actually a short walk from the listed address. Lack of options to communicate
with the driver as well as poor building markings are to blame.
Reflection:
The list was a bit difficult to make, but ultimately wasn’t too bad. You could
probably tell that I was at my apartment when completing this assignment, as
there are a lot more bugs than I realized in there. It will be interesting to
see how I use this way of thinking in the real world. It will be a bit of a
challenge to think with the bug mentality all of the time, but I’m sure it will
get much easier with practice.
Hey Tim!
ReplyDeleteSince we're roommates I totally identify with all of your complaints about our apartment. Leaving pens in my pocket is a common problem for me as well - maybe we should bring back the pocket protector. Our apartment complex definitely has a lot of issues, however i'm not sure how to fix that since it's very much out of our control. I hope it doesn't ruin being my roommate!
Hey Tim,
ReplyDeleteI could relate to a few of the thins that you found annoying. I agree with #4 because I had to use uber just for one day to go to Publix, and it was impossible. After two ubers cancelled my trip because the distance back to my house was too close, and therefore, they would not get paid much, my phone ended up dying! Just as I was finally about to get picked up. Then, I had to wait by an outlet for my phone to charge in Publix. It took me about three hours to finally get home. I also agree with #5. I get very irritated by the fact that UF has very little parking. It almost does not make sense. It would seem like UF would want to make it as convenient and affordable for students to get to and from class, but that is not the case. I have to drive to a bus stop, take the bus to UF, and then walk a half of a mile to my classroom. I get irritated every time.
